Kulen Mountain Waterfall
If you have explored the vast temple complex of Angkor Wat, now it is time to see where it all began. On this full day tour from Siem Reap you will head out to the Kulen Mountains, an isolated mountain massif in the Svay Leu District.
Located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Siem Reap, you will drive through a lush landscape of paddy fields and remote villages to the National Park.
Widely regarded as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, it dates back to the 9th-Century and is thought to be where Jayavanman II initiated the cult of the Shiva Linga and declared independence from Java in 802 AD.
Declaring a unified Khmer Empire under a single ruler, it began what later would be known as the Angkor period, although the capital city would not be moved for another century.
You will explore several ruins, including the carvings of Yoni and Linga etched into the sandstone riverbed and the stone representation of the Hindu god Vishnu lying on his serpent Ananta, with his wife Lakshmi at his feet.
Our guide will take you to the major sights and explain the history of the Khmer Empire, revealing some unique places along the way.
You will see pagodas and a beautiful waterfall at the end the river. Regarded by Cambodians as a sacred destination, you will get to soak up the atmosphere on the 7-hour day trip.
Wear comfortable shoes for the short hikes and remember to bring your swimming costume so that you can take a quick dip in the cool rock pools.
All entrance and permit fees are taken care of, along with round-trip transfers, and you will have a delicious lunch in the country before returning to Siem Reap in the early afternoon.
